Project Description
The history of this Haight Street townhouse evokes the playful nature of San Francisco’s Summer of Love. Each of the four units in this building were originally built with a great room dominated by a dramatic two-story, sweeping curved staircase. A Juliet balcony off the second-floor bedroom overlooked its own indoor swimming pool. My clients were ready to leave the 70s swinger pad behind and update the finishes and fixtures while keeping a nod to the building’s and City’s fun, colorful past.
We removed a wall to enlarge and unify the kitchen with the rest of the entertaining space. The kitchen is modern and functional with orange relief patterned tile from Sonoma Tilemakers. The cabinets are a mix of natural walnut and glossy panels from AGT. Large format wallpaper from Hovia covers the two story great room, further anchoring the design in the original style of the building. A large walk-in shower features aquamarine pillbox tile from Wow Tiles. The overall result is a modern oasis in the midst of a still-vibrant San Francisco neighborhood.
